Year 2
In these unprecedented times where we find schools are closed, we have put together some recommended websites and educational activities for parents to complete with their child/ren. We have provided each child with an exercise book to record their learning and we look forward to making time to share the children’s learning when we return to school.
Please also refer to your year group curriculum map
A number of educational websites have made their content available for home use over the next few months. Many of them have easy to find year 2 resources that you can use with your child to support their learning from home. Websites that are currently free to use:

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/ (Weekly Maths activities)
As well as these websites, we have attached a number of specific activities to support children’s learning.
Maths:
- When completing maths work, your child should be encouraged to use the formal written methods (which can be found on our website / maths / calculation policy) or as shown below for any calculations given. Please record these in the exercise book.
- Practise the 2, 3, 5, 10 times tables to be secure by the end of year 2. We have taught children games to help make this interesting like:
x table dice game You need:
- 1-12 dice (at home two dice from a game)
- counters (beads, buttons…anything)
- A group of 3 or more to play
Winner is who ever lands of the 12th multiple (2x = 24 5x = 60 10x =120)
- The winner picks up a counter, who ever has the most counters after 10 minutes wins!
1) Pick a times table to focus on; 2, 5 or 10
2) Roll the dice
3) Multiply said number on dice by x table focusing on
4) Continue round the table counting in the multiples until you get to the 12th multiple
5) whoever lands on the 12th multiple wins, picks up the counter. The game starts again and the winner rolls to start. For example:
My focus is on the 2 x table.
I roll , so I do…… 7 x 2= 14, next person says 16, next says 18, next 20, next 22, next 24 (winner! picks up the counter). Rolls to start again…..
- Remember there are a range of websites that children can use to practice these tables such as:

https://www.timestables.co.uk/

- See if you can complete the activity sheets within the link below. You can access more of these and many other maths activities from the Twinkl website. https://www.twinkl.co.uk/resource/year-2-school-closure-pack-interactive-learning-links-t-e-2549920
- Children also might have their green Maths Homework book
Reading:
- Please continue to read with your child at least 5 times a week.
- Enjoy reading for pleasure with your child and remember to ask lots of questions about the book and the characters, plot, possible endings, the setting etc.
- Remember there are free e-books available on websites such as – https://www.tckpublishing.com/free-ebooks-for-kids/
Writing:
- There are a range of writing opportunities attached that children can complete together with an adult or independently.
- Please encourage your child to write at any other opportunities e.g. keep a diary, write letters to their class friends, write a story, write a shopping list, make a fact file etc.
Topic: Use your Topic Mats (that were distributed before half term) in order to complete the Learning Log: What jobs were women able to do after the suffrage movement ended?
You can help your child/ren to create a poster, fact file, leaflet or any other ways to present their findings. These are just a few ideas to help you get started.
We hope you enjoy completing these activities with your child/ren and wish you and your family’s good health over the coming weeks.
Thank you for your continued support,
Year 2 Team
