Year 4 and Year 5 children were  extremely excited to work with science  specialists from the University of Worcester during our Crest Discovery Day in April. The children learned about real-life contexts such as flooding, alleviating poverty in Nepal and how humans and animals survive in the  Arctic. From this experience, children will be awarded either a ‘Star ‘or a ‘Discovery’ award in the coming weeks.

In Year 4, children explored how animals and humans are adapted to living in the Arctic. This involved children using butter to represent blubber (animal fat) on their gloves, which they soaked into cold water to see if they can stand the temperature with and without the animal fat.

In Year 5, children were fully engaged and learned about a range of aspects such as making a pulley which can carry food from the fields on the top of a Mount Everest down to the town below and what materials would be best for a house during flooding and the most cost effective. Both year groups were fascinated by the concepts and thoroughly enjoyed the day exploring and experimenting. What a super day they had being super scientists!
