Year 5

In these unprecedented times where we find schools are closed, we have put together some recommended websites and educational activities for parents to complete with their child/ren. We have provided each child with an exercise book to record their learning and we look forward to making time to share the children’s learning when we return to school.

Please also refer to your year group curriculum map

A number of educational websites have made their content available for home use over the next few months. Many of them have easy to find year 5 resources that you can use with your child to support their learning from home.

Websites that are currently free to use:

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/  (Weekly Maths activities)

As well as these websites, we have attached a number of specific activities to support children’s learning.

Maths:

  • All times tables up to 12 x 12 should be secure by the end of year 5.
  • Gold or Gold 2 Times Table Olympic sheets should be completed every day – don’t worry about the time!
  • Use White Rose Maths site – follow link – Resources – Primary – Schemes of learning – Year 5 – Use autumn or spring resources. Answer the questions in your book.
  • Complete an assessment sheet (attached) every Friday.
  • Remember there are a range of websites that children can use to practice these tables such as:

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/times-tables

https://www.timestables.co.uk/

  • See if you can complete the Twinkl daily activity sheets following the link at the top.

Reading:

  • Please continue to read with your child at least 5 times a week.
  • Enjoy reading for pleasure with your child and remember to ask lots of questions about the book and the characters, plot, possible endings, the setting etc.
  • Summarise what you have read in 30 words each day
  • 60 Second Reads are available to download from twinkl.co.uk
  • You could either print this at home or look at the short text and questions on screen and write your answers in their English book.
  • Remember there are free e-books available on websites such as – https://www.tckpublishing.com/free-ebooks-for-kids/

Writing:

  • There are a range of writing opportunities attached that children can complete together with an adult or independently.
  • Log onto spag.com and complete the set tasks (your username and password has been given to you).
  • Each writing task should take 2-3 days whereby you should plan, write and then edit your writing (see story starters or newspaper report stimulus). You can come up with your own success criteria like we have been doing in our writing lessons at school- think of your ‘outstanding sentences mat.’
  • Go on the website https://www.onceuponapicture.co.uk/ and click on ‘The Collections’. Use one of the images that you like to inspire some narrative writing.

Topic:

  • Ancient Greece – choose a topic heading from below and produce a poster or a PowerPoint Presentation about the Ancient Greeks.

Ancient Greece – City States

Ancient Greece – Sparta

Ancient Greece – Athens

The Trojan War

Ancient Greece Democracy

Ancient Greek Gods and Goddesses

The Olympic Games

We hope you enjoy completing these activities with your child/ren and wish you and your family’s good health over the coming weeks.

Thank you for your continued support,

Year 5 Team
