TIMES TABLE OLYMPICS

A times table system has been introduced across the school called ‘Times Table Olympics’. The children are required to practice their times tables regularly and complete timed tests weekly in order to progress through the seven stages of the process from ‘Qualifier Round 1’ to ‘Olympics Champion level’. The children receive rewards once they have completed each level successfully and a trophy award and certificate is given out in assembly when they have achieved their year group expectations to celebrate each child’s success. A record of the children’s achievement is kept in their ‘Times Table Olympic Record Cards’ in school that will be sent home at the end of each academic year.

Times table and division recall expectations for ‘Times Table Olympics’:

Year 1: 2’s, 5’s and 10’s times tables and linked division facts up to x12 and to know doubles and halves to 10.

Year 2: 2’s, 5’s, 10’s times tables and linked division facts up to x12 and to recognise odd and even numbers.

Year 3: 3’s, 4’s and 8 times tables and linked division facts up to x 12.

Year 4: All times table and division facts up to 12 x 12 and 12 ÷ 12 with quick recall and accuracy.

Year 5: Rapid recall of all multiplication and division facts up to 12 X 12. Multiplication of decimals and fractions.

Year 6: Multiplication and division of decimals and fractions.

With the National Curriculum changes in 2014 and new statutory assessments being implemented in Year 4 in 2019, there are greater demands on children knowing and being secure in their times table and division facts up to 12 X 12, 12 ÷ 12 by the end of Year 4. Therefore, It is important that parents spend some time with their children expressing the importance of times table and division facts and encourage them to practice these regularly at home.
